Wonderworking Power
It is an awesome thing to see power in action. There is the power that is generated by a professional golfer when he or she swings a golf club.
There is the power of the swing of a baseball player with bat in hand as he sends one over the fence. The warmer weather tells me it is baseball time again.
There is also the power of water. Powerful flowing water can generate enough electricity to serve an entire community. Equally so, there is the destructive power of water out of control.
Then there is the power of influence. All of us have influential people in our lives. They can influence us to do evil things and others can influence us to do good things for our fellowman.
The Bible speaks of another power – the power of the gospel. Paul the Apostle wrote –“I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”
Imagine the power to change the direction of a person who is headed for a place of torment to a place of endless blessing. That is the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. But how does it do that?
It has the power to grip the mind, stab the conscience, warm the heart, save the soul, and sanctify a life. It has the power to give peace and blessing to a level not even dreamed of before.
It has the power to remove prejudice from a person’s heart, make foolish men wise, make a crooked path straight, make sinful people holy, and a miserable person joyful.
Even with all that power, the gospel has limitations. Paul said it only works for those who believe. It cannot save a person who is unaware of it, neglects it, misapprehends it, rejects it, or will not believe it.
Given all that to be true, the gospel is so simple and clear that it has the power to save anyone. There is no one too degraded, too guilty, too miserable, and too lost because the fact is – we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
The gospel message is for everyone. It is for the wise and the unwise, the intellectual and the nonintellectual, the up and in and the down and out, the rich and the poor. It is for the man, the woman, and people of all ages. It is clear enough that a child can understand it and it is powerful enough to save the senior citizen. It is for everyone who believes.
