The Lights at Christmastime

Throughout the earthly ministry of Jesus, He often said things that seemed to be competing ideas. For instance, in one place (Matt. 5:14) He told a group of people, “You are the light of the world.” The definite article “t-h-e” sounds very specific.

In another place (John 8:12) He said to a different group of people, “I am the Light of the World.” Once again, we find the definite article. So, which is it? This is not an either-or but a both-and situation. Both statements are true.

The Bible has much to say about light and the importance of light. John the Baptist referred to Jesus as, “the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world (John 1:9).” Those who are followers of Christ are also called to be “lights” in the world. When you were a child, maybe you learned the song, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.”

In these days leading up to Christmas, we have a fresh reminder of the importance and the beauty of light. People are putting up Christmas trees and trimming them with lights. Many people are decorating their homes with lights. Some displays are very elaborate. Some are very simple. In our area, some of these lights stay on all night long while others go off with a timer at a certain time during the night.

My wife and I love to drive through our subdivision to see what new lights have appeared that were not there the night before. As it gets closer to Christmas, we will drive through other subdivisions and parks to see their light displays.

In these days of doom and gloom and darkness in the world, I applaud you for turning on the lights at Christmastime. Our world needs more light. Our world also needs more people to shine as lights.

As the world grows darker with bad news, wars, and rumors of wars, it is very important the true lights in the world shine brighter and brighter for people who need a fresh ray of hope for a brighter day.

So, the truth is – Jesus is the Light of the world. Jesus is still and always will be the true reason for the Christmas season.

Also, we are called to be lights in this world. Turn on those Christmas lights! Bring some joy into the heart of someone tonight. For sure be a spiritual light and a ray of hope for someone.

As you do, reflect on what Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
