How Will Attendance Be This Sunday?
How was attendance at your church on Sunday? Resurrection Day (what the world calls Easter) continues to be a phenomenal day in most churches.
We hear all the time about the decline in church attendance. Even so, the Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus continues to be the most attended service of the year for most churches.
For the first eleven years of my pastoral ministry, I served in the Smoky Mountains of east Tennessee. It was a tradition in that area for four churches to gather together for a sunrise service on Resurrection Day.
Each year one of the four pastors would share a devotion, our organist played a keyboard, and a trumpet troop from East Tennessee State University played their trumpets. It was always a powerful service even though it happened very early in the morning.
Of all the sunrise services where I participated, one stands out in my mind. On that morning the pastor’s message was in the form of answering a question – “Is there life after Easter?”
He went on to say that probably most of us and many others would gather at our respective churches later that morning for the worship service and celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. His next question was, “How many of you will be in church next Sunday?”
To support his question he revealed a stat that indicates, for many churches, one of the lowest attended services is the Sunday after Easter. I hope that is not true where you attend.
What would you say we all do what we can do to break that tradition this year? If you attended church last Sunday, or even if you did not, try your best to be in church this Sunday.
Surprise your pastor. Be a committee of one to do what you can to help your church have as many of not even more than you had this past Sunday. If you want to “bless the socks off” of your pastor this Sunday, show up for church.
If you are planning to attend a worship service this Sunday, how about sending me a text @ 901-497-1112. Just send the words, “I am going to church this Sunday.”
If you will attend, your pastor might be shocked, our Lord will be honored, and I am hopeful you will receive a blessing.
Have a great weekend. Also, be safe out there. It is expected we will be receiving an influx of people visiting in the area due to the eclipse. People might be driving somewhat erratically. Be careful, be on the lookout, and God Bless
