God’s Top Job
I guess many of us have thought about what it would be like to be God for a day. What would you imagine to be the most difficult task for God? It might just be getting people to want what they need.
It comes natural for us to want what we want. When was the last time you said, I want a new car? I want some new clothes. I want new furniture. I want a new device. I want ice cream on my slice of cherry pie.
How often do we get upset or mad at God when He does not give us what we want? In Matthew 6:8 we find that our heavenly Father knows what we need even before we ask Him. But what do we need?
We need air to breathe. By His creative hand He gives us the air we need. We don't even think about air unless we do not have it.
Most of us need a steady supply of electricity. We assume it will always be there when we flip the switch. As a result of the recent storms, many people in our area were without power for twenty-four hours. Some were without power for six to seven days.
Someone somewhere a week or two before probably complained about their high energy bill. Then, without power, they were begging and praying for their electricity to be restored.
How does God work to cause us to want what we need? I believe He uses desperation. A person walking around a swimming pool takes in fresh air thoughtlessly. If five minutes later someone pushes him into the pool and he doesn't know how to swim, from the bottom of the pool he is needing air like he has never needed it before. He is in a situation of desperation. In times of desperation, it is very easy to distinguish between wants and needs.
Jesus once told some people, “There is coming a day when you will seek me and not be able to find me.” Today, Jesus is available to anyone who calls upon Him. However, for many people Jesus is optional. They feel they do not need Him right now. Because of that, they do not want Him right now. But there will come a day when they will hear the most chilling words anyone could ever hear. “Depart from me you who practice lawlessness I never knew you.” Then, they will be in a situation of desperation, but it will be too late.
Today is the day to seek Him. He said, “If you seek me you will find me if you search for me with all your heart.” We feel like we always have time. We seem to put off important decisions until tomorrow. We all need a Savior. Jesus is that Savior we need. Do not make the dreadful mistake of waiting until it's too late to want what you will need for all eternity.
